  1. "If you lieth down with dogs, you shall rise up with fleas"-a proverb by Benjamin Franklin. This proverb has quite a powerful meaning, and can relate to any type of everyday experience. When Franklin says that one "lieth[s] down with dogs," he is referencing to one spending time with people who are not so great. Franklin also says that when that person who "lie[s] down with dogs" falls under the influence of those people who are a bad influence and becomes more like them, they "rise up with fleas". This means that anyone's character and judgements can be changed depending on who they spend time with.
To offer an example of this proverb, I will create an everyday modern example that people deal with on plenty occasions. Someone could be a student in High School or college, or at any time of their life, and could really have something going for themselves, but then this person gets into the wrong group of people. This situation could be that this person's friends have changed or they have chosen new friends who are into different things like drugs. This person who has decided to spend time with the people who do those things is likely to be influenced by these people, and not in a good way. This person who had everything going for them and an amazing future in store "Lie[d] down with dogs," and "r[ose] up with fleas".

  2. The proverb "If you lieth down with dogs, you shall rise up with flees" has one general meaning; If you surround yourself with undesirable people that behave poorly, you will become one of them and their bad habits will rub off on you the more you hang around them. These undesirable people are referred to as "dogs" because of their poor conduct and dishonorable habits. This term is fitting because dogs are usually thought of as animals that are usually thought of as dirty animals with poor hygiene. People that are described as "dogs" are usually disrespectful. Overall, Benjamin Franklin is expressing If you are around a certain type of crowd, their habits and way of life will start to rub off on you, and you will become one of them sooner or later.

One of the most common examples of this truth can be found in the high school environment. For example, If you are new to a certain school, you will not have friends right off the bat, so you will have to start looking for new friends and joining new friend groups. Since you are new, you will not know what most of these groups are like, so you might get with the wrong group accidentally. They might engage in mischievous behavior, and smoke, do drugs, etc. The more you are with this group, these habits will start to rub off on you, and you will begin to pick them up in no time.

  3. This proverb has two different ways you could interpret it. One is more broad, while one is more specific. Speaking more broadly, it is used to say that things can rub off on you. The more specific means that if you spend time with this that do bad things or have bad things, then those things could rub off on you. Both basically aim to warn you to be careful of what or whom you spend your time around, as they could rub off on you.

This proverb can be especially applicable to high school. In high school, kids are often exposed to bad things such as drugs, alcohol, and bullying. If kids get involved with these people (the dogs) the. They might get the fleas (the bad habit).

  4. The proverb "If you lieth down with dogs, you shall rise up with fleas" is meant to warn of who or what you are hanging around, because if they are bad things they might rub off on oneself. Even if you know something is not harming you, you should be careful to think about how those around you may interpret it differently. When Franklin refers to dogs, I think he is referring to people who do not have great reputations, and are looked down upon for a good reason. He implies that even if you are not one of those people if you are hanging around them for extended amounts of time, it could be detrimental to yourself, or your own reputation.
An example of the proverb in relation to high school is if a good kid starts to hang around the wrong crowd, then people will see this happening and associate you with the behaviors of the rest of the individuals, even though this may not be the case. Another thing that may happen to them would be picking up bad habits and such from being around this group for too long.

  5. In life, as in high school, there are always people who can have a bad effect on your reputation and even, beyond your reputation, who you are as a person. Benjamin Franklin best captured this truth when he famously stated that "If you lieth down with dogs, you shall rise up with fleas." In Franklin's metaphor, "[Lying] down with dogs" is symbolic of any act that could result in a nagging problem for you, the "fleas". It could be something such as a committing a crime that may not seem serious at the time, but that will be on your permanent record. Things such as that are readily available to anyone who might be considering hiring you, and will make the rest of your life very difficult. More specifically, however, Franklin may have been referring to the act of associating with a person or group of people who are carriers of bad habit fleas. Once you begin to associate with such people, it is easy to see how their parasites might jump over to you. People will perceive you as sharing these bad habits, and it will have a lasting effect on their opinion of you, even if you manage to avoid actually contracting those habits.
Now, more than ever with the continuous coverage of famous people, it is easy to see how lying with dogs can lead to rising up with fleas. A political candidate must answer to all of the friends he has had in his past. One of the challenges our current president, Barack Obama, faced in being elected for the first time was his alleged association with a man named William Ares. Ares is a known terrorist to the US government, and although Obama was undoubtably not friends with him during that time in Ares life, it still came back to haunt him.

    1. The proverb "If you lieth down with dogs, you shall rise up with fleas" means that if someone is around the wrong people, at the wrong time, then they are certain to obtain traits that can be considered hurtful to the persons character. A more literal translation is, is you sleep around you will get STDs, which is true. However, the most important lesson to obtain from this proverb is that to gain a wonderful reputation, you cannot be with not so wonderful people.
This proverb translates into everyday life all the time. When many people receive bad reputations for spending time with the wrong people, it hurts them and their friends. Also when people sleep wit prostitutes, they usually receive genital warts, or something in that area. The lesson to be learned is do not spend time with the wrong people because you can receive many bad things.

  6. Benjamin Franklin once said that "if you lieth down with dogs, you shall rise up with fleas" and it carries great meaning that everyone can relate to a point in their life. Franklin meant that if you let yourself hang out with the wrong person then their reputation will follow you or it could have a more literal meaning as in if you have sex with someone with AIDS, you could get it and then you'd be stuck with it for the rest of your life.
In high school, there are people everyone that are good and bad, the bad ones being the dogs, and if you choose to go with those people then you will get their bad reputation. It makes it difficult to avoid those bad people in high school because of peer pressure and especially if you do drugs or bully someone those things can follow you throughout high school and no one will want to associate themselves with you.

  7. The quote "if you lieth down with dogs, you shall rise up with fleas" means that if you hang around a crew of bad people, you can earn the reputation on them. Even if you are a good person, you could still have a bad reputation because you are with them. Also, this could be similar to guilt by association. That means that you might not have done anything, but you could still be blamed. Also this quote means if you sleep with a prostitute, you could get STD's or something of that sort.
The quote associates prostitutes with STD's and if you sleep with them, you could end up getting their diseases. This is common now because of the mass use of prostitutes. The best way to not get "fleas" is to not "lieth down with dogs".

  8. The proverb "If you lieth down with dogs, you shall rise up with fleas" means to me that if you start hanging out with the wrong people who are doing the wrong things, you will start to do the same wrong things they were doing. To me the "lieth down with dogs" part is referring to hanging out with the wrong people. then the "shall rise up with fleas" part is talking about the consequences of hanging out with those kinds of people and the wrong things you might start doing if you hang out with those wrong people. "dogs" referring to the wrong people, "fleas" referring to the wrong actions.
An example of this is with one of my really good friends. For a while she was hanging around bad people. Those bad people were doing drugs during school and on the weekends, getting drunk at night, smoking everyday, stuff like that. So when she started hanging out with those people she started doing drugs during school and on the weekends, getting drunk at night, smoking everyday, and sneaking out of her house to go do those things. eventually her parents found out and tried to make her stop. but she just couldn't. so she went to go see people about her addiction and they said that she needed to go to rehab because she was just so addicted to drugs after hanging out with those people that whenever she tried to stop she literally couldn't. To this day she is in rehab and I see her every once and a while. she is the perfect example of "If you lieth down with dogs, you shall rise up with fleas".

  9. The famous Benjamin Franklen said "If you lieth down with dogs, you shall rise up with fleas". To analyze, he was saying that if you hang around the wrong people, bad traits will rub off on you. The "lieth down with dogs" is simply a metaphor comparing bad influences to dogs. The "rise up with fleas" is also a metaphor comparing bad trait, to dirty fleas. Essentially, the "fleas" are a result of "[laying] down with the "dogs".
This proverb is great at describing high school situations. Lets say that there is a straight A student and decides he wants to make new friends, because his old ones are getting boring. His new friends are slackers, in a way that they never do there homework nor study. This student wont be making straight A's anymore because his friends rub off on him eventually and he will not do his homework nor study consistently anymore.

  10. This quote means that if you hang out with a certain group of people you shall pick up some of their habits. I do not believe that this quote is totally negative it is simply a good metaphor.
For example I hang out with my friends all the 24/7. I picked up a lot of things I didn't even do before I met them. Not all of it negative, however not all of it is positive either. I know that it is the same for them too. But chances are that if you are good friends with these people, then you probably did a lot of things that were similar anyway. This quote is pretty universal as well, for example, people who drink alcohol, smoke marijuana, or do any kind of drug, probably did it after they met other people or were even pressured by "dogs" to do these drugs.

  11. This proverb is a very widely used proverb in my life. This proverb means that "If you lie down with the dogs" you will become one of them" and shall rise with the fleas" means that you will carry their good/bad characteristics with you.

As an example: I use to be awful at basketball. Then I started surrounding myself with athletes. Then as a result I became more athletic. Then I started hanging around a lot of basketball players, therefore I picked up some characteristics from every body that I met. Another example is one of my friends. He was a really nice and good child. Until he started hanging around the wrong kids. Which led to his downfall because of the bad characteristics he picked up such as: stealing, cheating, doping, and bullying.
